STUDIES ABROAD⎮MIKAYLA CARSON

Hi there! I’m Mikayla Carson and I’m a junior at AXO, and I just studied abroad in Australia at the University of Sydney! It was definitely one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, and I recommend everyone goes to Australia some point in their life 😊

I lived in Sydney and that’s hands down one of the best cities in Australia. You have the famous Bondi beach and can go to happy hour on the ocean at the Bondi Icebergs club, there’s Manly Beach where famous surfing competitions happen all the time (one of my friends saw Kelly Slater there), there’s the Opera House and famous Sydney Bridge, and so much more. If you travel two hours North you can go sandboarding down the dunes on the beach of Port Stephens, and if you travel an hour South you can visit the jungle-like Blue Mountains and hike up to a ton of waterfalls.

My personal favorite places in Australia are Cairns, Whitsunday Islands, Byron Bay, Goldcoast, and Sydney. You can snorkel the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns and Whitsundays, and one of my favorite memories was hopping on a sailboat for two days and one night and sailing around the Great Barrier Reef around Whitsunday Islands. Byron Bay is a beachy-surfer town and you can hike to the most beautiful beach spots, if you’re lucky you might find Chris Hemsworth there too. The Goldcoast is gorgeous, that’s where Surfers Paradise and the guy who made Billabong are from. That’s also one of the only places you can hold a koala in Australia, and I definitely recommend doing that for a true aussie experience, they’re super cute and cuddly 😊 the koala’s name I held was Bunker!

Australia is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen and also the most fun place I’ve ever been to. It’s impossible to stay bored in Australia. Whether you want to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, feed a kangaroo and hold a Koala, climb the Sydney Bridge, learn to surf, hang out in the Outback, go to the beach every day, have the best acai bowls, or just meet the coolest people, there’s so much to do there. I definitely miss it, but I’ll be back soon!
